What to do in Tokyo in December? Recommendations from 10+ years in Japan

December will always be one of my favorite times in Japan (mainly thanks to Tokyo Godfathers).

Anyway, December in and near Tokyo feels like a soft reset. The air turns crisp (make sure to bring body cream), lights start popping up in every corner of the city, and even familiar places take on a quieter kind of magic. If you are looking for ideas for winter fun that go beyond the usual sightseeing list, here are some of my favorite activities that I've made tradition.

1. Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse Christmas Market

If you want holiday spirit without going overboard, this market nails it. You get warm drinks, twinkling lights, a huge tree, and a mix of local shops and seasonal stalls that feel cozy rather than commercial. It is easy to spend a few hours wandering around, snacking, and taking photos. The whole area sits by the water, so it feels calm even when it is busy. Going here is great paired with either the nearby onsen or watching the sunset at Landmark Tower.

2. Illuminations That Actually Feel Worth It

December in Japan = Illuminations! This is various spots all around Japan are covered in lights thousands of Christmas lights. Visiting the illuminations is a common date idea fo couples and friends in Japan, so if you're with your special someone, this is something you definitely don't want to miss!

Spots like Roppongi Hills and Shibuya’s winter lights offer a high energy version of the season. Both are easy stops if you are already out for dinner or shopping.

3. Ice Skating Rinks

Like anywhere else, December in Tokyo also means outdoor skating rinks. Each year, several seasonal rinks pop up around the city. The one at Tokyo Midtown is especially popular because it is surrounded by lights and food options, so you can warm up after you slip around the ice a bit. There are also temporary rinks in places like Yokohama and Tokyo Skytree Town Ice Skating Park, perfect for a simple date or a family outing.

4. Warm Up in an Onsen

Sitting in an outdoor onsen when the air is frigid is hands down what I look forward to every year in Japan! If you want to get out of Tokyo for a bit, look at Hakone, Atami, or even a simple day trip hot spring towns in Saitama. If you're going to the Yokohama Christmas Market, you can finish your day off at the nearby Manyo Club Onsen in the heart of Minato Mirai and overlooking the harbor.

Limited on time and cant take a day trip? There are still pretty nice onsens located within central Tokyo like Thermae-yu in Shinjuku.
